Quick Verdict
ChatGPT Plus is a general-purpose AI assistant at $20/month. Cursor Pro+ is a coding-focused IDE agent at $60/month. Cursor Pro+ is a legacy plan: new customers can no longer buy it, existing subscribers keep it at $60/month, and the comparable plan today is Super at $100/month. The choice depends on whether your primary use case is broad AI assistance or dedicated software development.
Pricing
- ChatGPT Plus: $20/month, monthly billing only. Includes Codex access and flexible credit top-ups.
- Cursor Pro+ (legacy): $60/month for existing subscribers. Two usage pools that reset monthly (Cursor Models and Other Models at API price), plus Bugbot, Cloud Agents, Automations and Origin.
- Cursor Super (current equivalent): $100/month, one weekly pool for Cursor models. Third-party models are billed at API list price from prepaid credit.
Cursor costs several times more than ChatGPT Plus, but it ships a coding IDE with agents and code review, which Plus does not. Cursor Premium ($30/month) is the cheaper entry point if Super is more than you need.
Model Access
- ChatGPT Plus provides GPT-6 in chat, GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and legacy OpenAI models. Context window is 54K tokens on GPT Instant and 256K on GPT Reasoning.
- Cursor Pro+ and Super include Cursor models (Grok 4.7, Grok 4.6, Grok 4.5, Composer 2.5). Claude, GPT and Gemini are available only at API list price from separate credit, not as part of the subscription.
Cursor reaches more vendors, but only Cursor models are included in the price. If you want Claude or GPT inside the IDE, expect to pay API rates on top.
Usage Limits
- ChatGPT Plus offers unlimited* interactions with dynamic guardrails. No published cap, usage scales within fair-use boundaries.
- Cursor Super uses one weekly pool for Cursor models (15x Plus), shared with Grok. The legacy Pro+ uses two monthly pools. Third-party model use is billed at API price.
ChatGPT Plus feels unlimited for chat but caps advanced features via credits. Cursor shows pool usage and API spend separately, so you can see what third-party models cost you.
Who Should Choose Each
Choose ChatGPT Plus if you:
- Need a general-purpose AI assistant for writing, research, and light coding
- Prefer OpenAIβs ecosystem and multimodal capabilities
- Want the lowest monthly cost for broad AI access
Choose Cursor Super if you:
- Write code daily and want an IDE-native agent experience
- Are happy with Cursor models (Grok, Composer) and will pay API price for Claude or GPT when needed
- Want Bugbot, Cloud Agents and Automations included
- Value large context windows for navigating complex codebases
Already on Cursor Pro+? You keep it at $60/month.
The price gap is justified if coding is your primary AI workflow. For general-purpose use, ChatGPT Plus remains the better value. Considering a higher tier? See ChatGPT Plus vs Cursor Ultra, or explore the best AI plans for coding.
